Our final project will be a collaborative one, so we need to discuss a topic that all can agree upon. The project itself will be to produce an informational website. That sounds kind of boring, but if you think about it, all websites tend to be informational since they're a kind of functional document. Each of you will contribute to the site by producing one or more web pages that will be interlinked to the rest.
We will discuss possibilities and ideas in class. My contribution to kick things off: we could possibly create a fictional version of something in the real world, or invent something entirely. Like a corporation, travel guide, biological or ecological documentation, history, etc. Each student could contribute a page that presents one aspect of that fiction (the ecology of a fictional creature, uses of a fictional product, etc). Here is a great example of such a site by Baltimore artist Josh Haycraft: http://bhbitb.com/.
Post more ideas in the comments! Let's get a discussion going.
Haunted St. Mary's
ReplyDeleteSMCM alternate reality- surreal st mary's with photoshopped pictures that distort the reality...
conspiracy theorist website
obscure college activitites
Here are my 5 ideas...
ReplyDelete1. fictional or factual SMCM page involving buildings, majors, and general culture
2. website that compiles art work/music/prose and poetry/essay work that people have done and would want to share
3. site about interesting digital media artists (everyone could choose one artist to focus on)
4. Site about unknown facets of SMCM campus/community (who started the campus farm? Where is chancellors point? What do our demographics look like?)
5. SMCM fashion site... like this portland style blog
http://www.urbanweedsblog.com/
Ok, so my ideas:
ReplyDelete1. A look at the art/culture of a long dead (fictitious) civilization.
2. A web site about the different types and styles of websites through the years. i.e. Our own take on what web pages in the early 90s/mid 90s/late 90s looked like.
3. A site dedicated to pie.
4. A visualization/anthropomorphization of the technologies that make up web pages and the internet e.g. a web of tubes representing a switch or a 30s era telephone operator representing DNS, etc.
5. A tourism page for a country of our making.
So here is what I'm thinking:
ReplyDelete1. An insider's guide to St. Mary's (Shoe Tree, 7 Wonders, the Point) and things to do/that happen there.
2. A tourism website to Baltimore. Again, an insider's guide.
3. A site which depicts different aspects of a decades culture (fashion, television, Hollywood, music, etc...)
4. A page on ways to procrastinate doing work (watching television, playing frisbee golf, napping, etc...)
5. A site on Harry Potter, and a visual interpretation of each book aside from what is on the cover.
Personally, I really like the idea of doing with St. Mary's, but am game for anything else someone would throw out there!
Some ideas
ReplyDelete1) If you were a fictional character, who would you be? Create an image depicting yourself as whatever literary character, superhero, or fairytale character you identify with.
3) The mythical creatures of St. Marys (Loch Ness style)
3) If this class were a reality show or TV sitcom, what would it look like? We'd have individual archetypes (the artist, the philosopher, the vixen, etc.), character pages as well as a group page.
4) The future face of St. Marys alum. What will we be when we grow up? (Doctor? Astronaut? Dragon Slayer? Starving artist?)
5) The "real" St. Marys- an alternative history of St. Marys city/college and how the legends came to be (e.g. how did the man get stuck in the statue? Whose were the first shoes to be thrown on the shoe tree?)
5 Ideas for an Informational Website:
ReplyDelete1.) A fictional zoo or a real zoo. Maybe a St. Mary's zoo where each animal represents some aspect of the campus/faculty/staff/students.
2.) A Sociological look at the past, current and future traditions of St. Mary's and how the school functions.
3.) A fictional society on this planet, or not.
4.) A project of surreal photos taken around SMCM campus, each with a bizarre description of the photograph.
5.) A "National Treasure" of sorts on St. Mary's campus or the surrounding area.

ReplyDelete1) A satirical St. Mary's wiki or related page.
ReplyDelete2) Business website of a fictitious corporate entity, satirizing said corporate entity's unethical/questionable/cut-throat business practices.
3) Some kind of modern-retro throwback; think Bioshock or Fallout 3 stylistic content. Like those old instructional videos for nuclear safety in case of a Soviet nuclear attack during the Cold War. Hiding under a desk....right.
4) A fantasized/mystical guide to St. Mary's. Your +30 charisma charm won't work here.
5) A thorough documentation of the entire class helping me work on my car. Represented through digital media so that the world can help work on
1. Our own Apocalyptic countdown
ReplyDelete2. A guide to restaurants of St. Mary's COunty. Where to go for what/what's actually worth going to.
3. Summer Survival guide for Maryland. How to beat the heat and humidity, what to do in your spare tim, etc.
4. Create our own legendary animal for the St. MAry;s River somewhat like the Loch Ness
5. Collection of ghost stories about different parts of campus and historic. They could be fictional or stories that previously existed.
1. I really like the comic book idea
ReplyDelete2. We could try making some memes
3. We could do a travelogue whether it be fictional or realistic
4. A how too guide or forum type page
5. Postcards from exotic places
1. A SMCM game, user must answer questions about smcm to reach the final goal (dont know what that would be
ReplyDelete2. Create a website dedicated to bringing chipotle to SMCM
3. A website for all of us to display our art work on, like a community build blog
4. A site where we can create a collaborative work of digital art, Each person can only add one line or image to the large work at a time on the site
5. A site detailing the underwater lodging we have for SMCM guests.

ReplyDelete1. A wiki for St. Mary's College of Maryland. It would be a place to record the history and traditions of the college, students, and the surrounding environment.
ReplyDelete2. A fake news site possibly similar to The Onion.
3. A fictitious wiki site such as Uncyclopedia.
4. A tourism website for a fictitious place similar to San Serriffe.
5. A website to display all of the digital art created either for this class or by other students at the college.
As far as further discussion of what we want our factual and useful site goes: a summer survival guide to St. Mary's seems interesting but how are we incorporating digital media into it? Perhaps a surreal survival guide? Still useful, but...artsy in a way.
ReplyDeleteI think a summer guide could work. If we approach the web site as a digital publication instead of some monolithic-static-page-thing from the 90s internet, we could be on to something.
ReplyDeleteEverybody writes their own panel on something to do/interesting things to see in the summertime, and it would be presented together.
I found a website that, although about newspapers, has some helpful visual ideas:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/02/11/award-winning-newspaper-designs/
^ that site looks cool chris.
ReplyDeleteI agree with him that a summer guide to SMCM would be very do-able and can also combine elements of a restaurant guide. Everyone could find an aspect of the topic they can relate to to write about. For example, I go for runs and do yoga everyday so... I could write about how to adjust to running in the Maryland summer weather, where the local gyms are, the hours on the arc, and also mention local races. I can also discuss local yoga studios and how accepting they are to students from the college. This portion would just be my part of the project, everyone could choose something they are interested in like... places to go to eat, places to go to drink, happenings in historic, local concerts or bands...etc.
The previous ideas all work for me, but as far as the discussion went yesterday it seemed like most people would be interested in site that looks at SMCM traditions...(7 wonders, Natty Bo Hunt, Zombies, Assassins Game, Shoe Tree by PG, Ponding on Birthdays, Hallowgreens, Mayday etc.) Each person could take a single tradition and creatively build upon it with digital media. Also gives a good sociological look at how the students make the best of a campus that is isolated from any real cities. Just a suggestion...
ReplyDeleteCataloging the 7 Wonders and other traditions honestly doesn't seem very fun, or particularly useful to me. Any student that comes here and stays for at least one semester will be exposed to the 7 Wonders and other traditions; those who visit or consider going to this school hear it from Admissions.
ReplyDeleteIncorporating some kind of digital media/the website as itself as digital media seems interesting, but the traditions of St. Mary's are well known to anyone who comes here whether temporarily or for an extended stay. To me, the traditions are our own, taking an anthropological or sociological look at them just seems...boring or unnecessary for outsiders.
I really don't think that admissions discusses the 7 wonders to incoming students. While it revealed pretty soon to students, I know that most are still unclear about them even after they have been here for 4 years. I think that 7 wonders would allow us to have a cool artistic take on each one. I also think that doing Natt¥ Bo, Assasins, etc... would also be a great final project idea.
